Number Seventeen

Alfred Hitchcock; UK 1932; Universal; Certificate U; 60 minutes *

A rare Hitchcock misfire. The film begins with a formal flourish - a hat blown off down the street - but the plot turns out to be as creaky as the spiral staircase in the old dark house where the jewel thieves converge. The storyline is stuffed full of stock characters (master criminals, a Bulldog Drummond-like detective) and even the effects - buses and trains (clearly models) rushing headlong - aren't especially impressive.
