JOHN ANDERSON

John Anderson, 69, the tall, craggy-faced character actor who was a snooping used car salesman in Alfred Hitchcock's film, "Psycho," and who also had played a recurring role as the grandfather of television's "MacGyver," died Aug. 7 at his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif., after a heart attack.

He was perhaps best known for his work in television, having appeared in more than 500 small-screen roles, including frequent 1960s appearances on "The Twilight Zone," In addition to "Psycho," he appeared in such movies as "Smokey and the Bandit II," "Ride the High Country" and "Cotton Comes to Harlem."

Mr. Anderson, who received a master's degree in drama from the University of Iowa, began his acting career on a Mississippi River showboat. After a year at the Cleveland Playhouse, he moved to New York, where he appeared in both off-Broadway and Broadway productions, including the Broadway show "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."
