Alfred Hitchcock honored by stars

Hollywood paid homage Wednesday to its master of suspense, 79-year-old film director Alfred Hitchcock, hailing him as genius, a master and an amazing man.

Film stars such as Anthony Perkins, James Stewart and Cary Grant came to honor Hitchcock, who was presented with the Life Achievement Award of the American Film Institute in a televised ceremony. Ingrid Bergman flew from London to act as mistress of ceremonies at the ceremonial dinner.

Hitchcock, who wears a heart pacemaker and suffers from arthritis, has made more than 60 feature films and hundreds of television films over the past 57 years. He is currently preparing for his next film The Short Night.

After receiving a standing ovation, he spoke of the tributes that had been paid to him and said, "This has encouraged me. I will go on."
